Poetry editor needed

I'm sad to see Spencer Troxell moving on, he brought a thoughtfulness and perspective to the position that I really enjoyed. But co-editors are made to go on to other things, and I don't really mind that.

Poetry editors work in conjunction with --Ed. Dan Scannell to read, evaluate, send rejection letters, and accept an occasional piece of work for Thieves Jargon. You'll correspond with lots of nice writers and a few disgruntled ones. You'll read enough work that yours will only get better.

We're looking for somebody that's been published in Thieves Jargon before, and therefore knows what we like to publish. You need to have an appreciation for street-level writing, MFA-grade craft, and an eye for that one unique line.

Interested candidates, please send an email to thejargon at gmail dot gom, listing a few of your favorite poems, either from our archives or links to other journals.

Thanks, Matt. It was a fun experience.

out of curiosity, how much of a time commitment is it, Spencer or anyone else who can comment?

You're going through poetry editors like panties. My guess is, the problem starts at the top.

Anonymous, that sounds like a perfect idea: why not have an anonymous poetry editor? Why not have every poem listed as written by anonymous? Why not have every word be "zero" or "one"?

Spencer's been the poetry editor for more than a year I'm pretty sure. I think I'm going through panties at about the same rate.

Anonymous: It depended on the number of submissions, and Dan really didn't put any kind of pressure on me to get them done by a given time. It took me around an hour or two every so often.

Mather: Matt & Dan are both fine gentleman to collaborate with.

Matt: You should probably change your panties more often.

Ha ha, you cards! Has it really been a year? I thought it was a lot less than that...

You're definitely not as smart as you think you are.

mather said...

Nathan, no one is as smart as they think they are. But, to be clear, I am not a very smart person. I am not edumacated. I don't have the mfa. I simply have a big mouth. So, next time you can insult me by telling me I got a big mouth.

No shit, dick-spittle!

I'm gonna fucking kill myself. I hate dating. How does it always go so quickly from "You're so cute and funny," to "Please leave me alone, you need help."

Hey everybody, the great and humble non-hip regular-guy Jimmy Chen's got a new blog on HTML GIANT telling us all how to be cool.

Detector, women are the most pc minded of our species, so they are very quick to judge possible lovers as mentally instable. They do not like men who have a hard time negotiating society. Sometimes they pretend to, but they don't. I imagine you have a hard time of it. I would recommend a call girl every month or two. Either that or go ahead and kill yourself, as you suggested. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

mather said...

Why don't you ask G. Tod Slone to be the poetry editor?

Detector said...

Mather you should aspire to be more like Alyosha Karamazov and less like Smerdyakov.

mather said...

Hey, what is this, a bit of snooty literary reference from Detector? The only name I've ever heard you drop was Katy Perry. I read The Brothers K. and I don't want to fashion myself after either of them, or Dos himself. I do like this quote, which I wrote down from that book several years ago and never forgot: "And above all do not be so ashamed of yourself, for that is the cause of everything."

Detector said...

Katy Perry is awesome. I've seen her in concert twice.

I had to read the Brothers Karamazov because I was reading The Exorcist and its sequel Legion and couldn't get all the references to Dostoyevsky.

I think Alyosha is cool. Why would you not want to be like him? He represents goodness.

I don't get why mentioning Dostoyevsky is snooty, all literature is just entertainment. Referencing it is no snootier than referencing an episode of "Growing Pains" or some chinky yellow blogger you dislike.

mather said...

Mentioning Dostoevsky is much snootier than mentioning something on modern tv. Give me a break. Got any comments on Joyce, too, Detector? Or what about David Foster Wallace! You know any story is better with a canonical name dropped in. And who the fuck is Katy Perry anyway?

mather said...

Oh, I see, if you've seen Katy Perry twice in concert she must be a singer.

Why would I want to be like somebody representing "goodness"? Hell, for all I know that quote above is from Aloshya, I don't remember the book that well. But I do know that Dos reckoned human nature much more complicated than just one character, and that was the point of the whole book. The human experience is/should be varied and rich. Nothing so simply as "goodness".

Detector said...

How could you not have heard of Katy Perry? They play her stuff songs on every station constantly and she's always on TV. Don't you watch the MTV Video Music Awards?

She's not just a singer but also a songwriter, guitarist, and dancer, and she dresses better than anyone.

I don't place more importance on the work of a fiction writer than I do on any other pop artist. So I can't see mentioning a writer being snootier anymore than mentioning Eminem or Will Smith as being snooty.

When it comes down to it Dostoyevsky is an entertainer just like Katy Perry or Michael Jackson. I would say David Foster Wallace is a failed entertainer since his stuff is so boring but I don't know since John Krasinski liked him enough to make a movie out of one of his books. So he must appeal to some people.

Everyone in that book is pretty much good in some way or concerned with being good except for Smerdyakov and Fyodor Karamazov, they are just total douchebags.

Mather Poem #1 by JTK

Lil' black boy
lil' blackie
why we be havin an oreo for a president? he ain't no bad ass nigga like Jesse Jackson, he be whiter than the whitest white man.

Mather be blacker than him even though some college professor said he jerk off with a microscope and tweezers but being black ain't all about yo dick size it be about bein all angry and bein like "nobody treat me fair massah give me mah reparations"

cuz mather be all wantin reparations from college professors fer makin fun o him like funyuns that tastes like crunchy onion rings and leave chinky yellow dust on yo fingers like if some gooky slope blogger that Thieves Jargon loves got sucked of all his moisture and crumpled up like pee pee flavor kool aid powda.

If matha be a nigga white on the outside like Nestle Flips white flavahd den Matt Digangi be a gotti boy guido wit no grease in da hair, no game, and no pizza parlor.

mather said...

Yeah, I took care of that poetry professor yesterday on his blog Molten Language.

mather said...

Detector said...
