Issue 192

Never thought I'd see this happen... went away for a week's vacation, come home to a new issue of Thieves Jargon. Glad to see Scannell keeping some of the regulars around and bringing in some new people as well. Totally weird to read a new issue without knowing any of the work that's being published in there. Totally love Hello, Oblivion so far. Looking forward to the rest of Issue 192.

Doesn't Justin Hyde submit to you guys anymore?

I'd like to add Josh Olsen's name to the list of my favorite writers for this issue.

I helped Justin edit some poetry books earlier this summer, maybe he's feeling some conflict of interest or maybe he's just chilling. We each have a habit of disappearing for a little while. Either way, I'm ashamed to not have emailed him in a while.

What did you help him edit?

Look, I know I'm not deep, but can someone please explain the first poem please? Is he playing checkers with Astro from the Jetsons, or what? Honestly, man...what distinguishes this poem, what made the editor take it over all the others? I really want to know.

Why should the editor have to explain why he chose a certain piece? And anyway, what are the standards on good poetry? Poetry is really tough to determine anything solid on. For one thing, there are no rules. With fiction, at the very least, you can criticize if a piece has numerous typographical errors or anything like that. -PHM zamila

There are no hard and fast rules about poetry or any other form of art, fiction included...but it is especially hard to figure "it" out or move things along at all when literary discussions are limited to smiley faces, winks and butt-fuck jokes...when critique is cut off at the very hint of disagreement or negativity...when contrary opinion is shot down at the knees...
